What is next Operating System after Windows 8?

Update as on 25-May-13 : Finally Microsoft has revealed the release of next operating system of Windows 8. However, they dropped the name Windows Blue and named it Windows 8.1. Tami Reller, CMO and CFO of Microsoft's windows division, mentioned the same, while addressing JP Morgan's Technology, Media and Telecom conference. Reller didn't mention the launch date, though hinted that it would be launched during the holiday season. The upgrade from Windows 8 to Windows 8.1 will assumed to be free.

*********************************************************************************

Next Operating System

Update as on 28-Dec-12 :It has just been a couple of months that Microsoft has launched its Windows 8 operating system. The windows 8 sales has not been impressive in the first couple of months. And now the rumor in the air is that they are working in full-fledged for their next operating system, Windows Blue. It has been heard that Windows Blue will be released sometime in summer in the next year.

Well, how this rumor was aired? The initial news came from ZDNet in the month of August, when they stated in one of the articles that Windows blue would be the interim version for Windows before Windows 9 gets released. It has been known that the change will consists of UI changes. The price of this Window's next operating system same will be much cheaper than that of Windows 8 operating system. The tech website “The Verge” has mentioned that once Windows blue is released, the Windows 8 SDK will be updated to support the new release. As a result, the built in apps, which are specifically created for Windows 8, need to be upgraded to be compatible with Blue. Windows app will continue to run in Blue even after software up-gradation.

The news of Windows Blue has got more weightage off late while a news broke up in a Taiwanese forum. The forum user claimed that he was already running a Windows operating system with alpha build 9622, whereas the Windows 8 build was 9200. Though he has referred it as Windows 9, we cannot rule out the possibility of Windows Blue. According to him, there’s only some difference in the kernel and it is expected to be 6.3. The general UI of this next operating system is still the Metro UI and the start screen will continue to be the same. It means that the users will not get default start button and menu in the next version as well.

Slow your brain aging through NEUROBICS

In our locality, in the last 10 years, at least 5 gymnasiums have been opened up. When I visited one of the gymnasiums for enrolling myself, I was surprised to see that it was quite crowded at around 7-00’o clock in the morning. I enrolled myself on that very day and started my exercise the next day itself. I observed that there were two things, which were on high demand. One was the treadmill, for which the gym management was forced to impose a time limit of 15 minutes per member. The other area, which was very crowded, was the aerobics floor. Many people only came there to do aerobics. But, have we ever thought that we do also need neurobics to keep our brain healthy and fit?

This showed me that people are now more health conscious than ever before. And they are more interested to keep their body fit and flexible rather than building their muscles. Aerobics is supposed to be the best exercise to lose weight and keep ourselves fit and healthy. While we are too much conscious about our health, we do forget about the most important part of our body i.e. brain. As, lack of exercise makes our body unfit, lack of activity in our brain causes it to lose its sharpness slowly. Scientific research stated that as we grow older, our brain slowly dies. There are daily exercises, which can revive our brain cells and slow the process of brain-aging. As we do aerobics to keep our body fit, neurobics should be done to keep our brain sharp and cognitive. Neurobics is the aerobics of the brain. This particular terminology was coined by late neurobiologist Lawrence Katz and Manning Rubin in their book “Keep Your Brain Alive”.

Before we dig deep in to the theory, let us recapitulate ourselves how our brain works. Though all the living beings have brain, human brain is quite unique in nature. So why, human can talk, understand, sing, dance, think and correlate different ideas and objects. The brain consists of approximately 100 billion nerve cells, called NEURONS. Each of our activities is controlled by signals given by neurons. Neurons transmit electrochemical signals to govern each and every activity. It has three body parts i.e. Cell Body, Axon and Dendrites or nerve ending. Cell body is the main part of the neuron. DNA is one of the constituents of the cell body. If the cell body dies, the neuron dies. Axon is the part, which carries the electrochemical message. Dendrites or nerve ending makes connections to the other neurons. The neurons are distinguished based on their functions. There are three different kinds of neurons.

neurobics

Sensory Neurons – It carries signals from our external body parts to our central nervous system.

Motor Neurons – It carries signals from our central nervous system to the external body parts.

Interneurons – It is a connector between neurons.

There is scientific evidence that as we grow old, our brain experiences age-induced cognitive deficit. Lawrence Katz has mentioned in his book that through neurobics, we can slow the process of brain-aging. According to him, though we do different activities all over the day, the same may not be termed as neurobics. Routine action becomes so automatic to the individual that it doesn’t generate required stimulation in our new brain circuits. In contrast, non-routine activities or change in pattern activates the growth of neurons. There may be three ways that you can imbibe yourself in neurobics (as per Larence C. Katz and Manning Rubin)

a)Try to involve more senses in your regular activity – Here it has been suggested that you try to involve some other senses in your routine work. The change should be a noticeable change. For example, you do generally write with a pen. Now you have changed it to a pencil. This kind of change will not help your brain to participate in neurobics. However, if you try to write with your left hand, the signal from the brain should flow to your left hand instead of the right. It will create a new circuit with a new area of brain involved in the same.

The other examples in this area are getting dressed or taking shower with your eyes closed.

b)Do something which evokes emotion – Do something special, unusual, fun, which evoke one of your basic emotions like happiness. For example, you can go for a long tour with your family.

c)Change in pattern of routine activities – Here you need to break the pattern of your routine activity so that it can differently sensualize our brain. For an example, take a different route to your office or rearrange your office with a new look.

Henceforth, whenever you visit your fitness center for a quick warm up, don’t forget to go for neurobics when you come back to home J

Train your monkey mind to Increase Concentration

Have you ever heard the term Monkey Mind or Mind Monkey? The term correlates a situation in our mind with incessant thoughts jumping from one subject to another as a monkey jumps from one branch to another. This not only affects our mental peace, it takes away vital energy from us as well.

The concept of Monkey Mind was originally coined by Buddha. He told that the human mind is filled with drunken monkeys. They all chatter, screech and do all sorts of things to draw attention from us. If we fail to give attention to any one of them, it will make us crazy. Some of the monkeys are smart enough to draw our attention, every time they appear. Fear is one such monkey.

monkey mind

The obvious outcome of the monkey mind is restlessness, mental anxiety, inability to concentrate and fail to memorize. As we are becoming more and more civilized, this syndrome is becoming more prominent. It may be because of our ever changing life style; demand from the society and family; stressful life; long hours at work. All of us are now multi-tasking and deal with plethora of information day in and day out. The core existence of Monkey Mind is data processing that we accumulate through our activities all over the day. Our mind continuously does all sort of permutation and combination with the data to find a way out of the situation or determining next step. So, where monkey mind is a cause of concern for us, it is simultaneously a necessity to dodge through the way of our complex life style.

Knowing that Monkey Mind is a necessary evil, we need to find a way to tame these monkeys. To do so, we need to first find out the reason of the very existence of these monkeys, one by one and then tame them one by one. As beating a monkey or run away from a monkey adversely affect the situation, opposing a particular thought or delaying action for a particular thought will push us toward the walls and make the situation worse for us. Rather, we can hear to the monkeys and understand the situation. Either we can take an action to pass through the situation or prepare a tasktask list to overcome it. It is imperative that we write down the tasktask list on a piece of paper or in our multi-media device. It ensures that the monkey will not make much noise for some time. However, the mind monkey again becomes active after some time.

While organization helps a lot in keeping the monkey mind in peace at least for some time, it does not solve the issue completely, neither it helps us to overcome the distraction issue. According to a joint study by Harvard University, Dartmouth College, and the University of Aberdeen in Scotland, our brain is naturally primed to wander wherever possible. It has suggested that we should take a break whenever we don’t enjoy our job. Jonathon W. Schooler, PhD, a professor of psychology at the University of California, Santa Barbara said “If you don’t take regular breaks – especially when you are not enjoying your job –your brain will take them for you’’. As you can understand, this very concept is closely associated with monkey mind or unquiet mind. To overcome this kind of situation, it is often suggested that we go for a break when it is required. It is very much important that we live at that moment and don’t think about future and past frequently.

The ultimate solution of Monkey Mind is to train the monkeys. Meditation is the best solution for the same. Through continuous meditation, we can tame our mind monkey. The positive affirmation is one of the best tools to tell ourselves i.e. the mind monkeys that we are calm and relaxed. You can exercise a very simple meditation.

1.Sit at a calm place comfortably.

2.While inhaling, say “I am”

3.While exhaling, say “Calm”

While doing this meditation, keep proper attention to your inhale and exhale pattern. You may be initially distracted by different thoughts. However continuous practice will help you to focus and once you will be able to do this, you can find that your body and mind become relaxed.

How to improve brain power

In today’s fast world, we live a stressful life. Where brain exercise helps us to keep our brain sharp and focused, stress has negative effect on the brain. Where it is not possible to avoid stress in our day to day life, it is possible to improve brain power through relaxation technique. In one of my articles, “Stressful day impacts your sleep at night?”, I have mentioned the use of binaural brainwave entertainment as a relaxation technique.

So, to improve brain power and keep our brain healthy, it’s actually two pronged advice. On one part, we need to check that there is minimum negative impact from stress. This can be achieved by adopting relaxation techniques for the brain. On the second part, we need to have regular exercise for our brain. If you continue a brain exercise, you will be able to improve your brain power slowly. Based on the type of exercise that you are doing, you will be able to see that your response time has got reduced on a particular area. I am very certain that once you will understand what magic it’s bringing to your life, you will never stop it. However, you may have to do some homework before you want to start tickling your brain. Have a list of areas that you want your brain to enhance and based on that, select the brain exercises that you would need to practice.

how to improve brain power

Now, you may ask what type of exercise should be performed for brain. There are numerous exercises that can be used to enhance your brain activity. Doing puzzle or doing a Soduku will enhance your brain activity. These two are quite simple but an excellent brain stimulation technique. Rubik’s cube is another game, which can be played to stimulate many unused areas of our brain. There are many more games and technique, each one is meant to enhance different kind of stimulation for your brain. Don’t you have the time for all these things? No worry, sit with your son/daughter/sister/brother to help them to solve a complex math problem. It will provide you a good exercise for your brain.

Stressful day impacts your sleep? Use binaural technique

Are you stressed out too much? Having sleepless night or difficult to get into sleep after you go to bed? This is very common among people in high profile job. After you move on from one meeting to another, handling all sorts of people both internal and as well as external to your organization, you have numerous things moving back and forth in your mind. In this situation, it takes time to slip into the sleep mode after you go to bed. Let us see, how the binaural technique helps us to resolve this problem.

Let’s first understand the root cause of this situation. I have discussed different states of mind in my other post Improve Mind - A Key of Success. The phenomenon of sleeplessness is closely associated with this concept. As we have already discussed, we have four states of minds Alpha, Beta, Theta and Delta. When we are conscious, we live in beta state. Too much activity and concentration increase the frequency of our brain wave. As the frequency gets increased, we feel tired. After we pass through a hectic day, we do have continuous high frequency. If you have noticed that after a long drive, the engine of the car takes substantial amount of time to come back to normal temperature. Our brain is no different from that. It takes long time to reduce the brain wave frequency. The time taken by our brain to reduce its wave frequency is different for different people. It may also happen that people spend sleepless the entire night. Once the brainwave frequency comes down and gets into the lower frequency zone, we fall asleep.

binaural

So what is the remedy for this? Different people do different things but what we are going to discuss here, is scientific and easy to achieve. The brain waves can be changed through sound and this particular phenomenon is called brain wave entertainment. In 1839, Heinrich Willhelm Dove discovered a method of entertainment, called binaural brainwave entertainment. Now, what is a binaural brain wave entertainment? Binaural refers to perception of sound of one frequency in one ear and of different frequency in another ear. As a result of different frequencies, our brain wave creates a third signal, which is the difference between the two frequencies. The frequencies of the beating in the ear should be below 1000 Hertz for the beating to be noticeable. And the difference between the two tones should be low otherwise the two tones will be heard separately. So if the frequency in one ear is 520 Hz and in another it is 510, our brain will create a third frequency at 10Hz. Once, our brain wave attains a low frequency, we fall asleep.

There are many businesses that provide brainwave entertainment in different forms. There are also sites, which provide this facility for free. You can try http://free-binaural-beats.com/. Go to the DELTA tab and select a MP3. However, when you try this one, remember to listen it in a quit and calm place. The musical system should be a stereo one and your ear-phone should be plugged in both the ears. This will induce delta wave in your brain. As a result, you will feel relaxed and get into sleep very soon. You can as well use this technique when you want to get a quick relaxation in between your work. In such cases, you may get into alpha mode.

Stock Tips - Consider Infy For Short Term Gain

In the last quarter, Q2FY2012-13, Infosys reported a net profit of Rs 2369 crore, up 24% YoY, while revenue rose 21% YoY to 9,858 crores. The result was just in line with street expectation. However, it lowered its guidance on its EPS to disappoint the street.  Though the long term outlook is still in doubt, the current level may not be justified for the stock. When the Q3 result is awaited with in next few weeks, we believe that the stock will move upward. The technical is also supporting our opinion. Infosys stock price has hit two week’s high today.  As per RSI and slow stochastic, Infosys is in over sold region. Also, three side up candle stick pattern on 19th, December, 2012 implies that the stock is on the verge of moving up. Our first target for the stock is 2390, followed by the second target 2450 in the next 2 to 4 weeks.

Invest Your Money In Power Finance Corporation (PFC)

Over the last five years, PFC has maintained its growth momentum. Where the top line has grown at the CAGR of 21.05%, the bottom line has grown at the CAGR of 20.44%. Power segment being the main thrust in the 12th plan and PFC playing a pivotal role in the power segment, the prospect of the stock is quite bright.

There are multiple factors working behind the buy call of PFC.

1.     Being in power segment and nodal agency for the Government’s ambitious ultra mega power project program, PFC will be playing a crucial role in the coming years. To keep the India growth story intact, the power shortage needs to be narrowed down gradually. In the 12th Year plan, the planning commission has set a target of adding over 88,000 MW of power generation capacity. Considering the thrust from Government and the crucial role of PFC, the company is expected to see good growth in the topline.

2. Consistent rise of both topline and bottomline. -PFC has maintained robust performance over the years. The topline has grown at the CAGR of 21.05% whereas the bottomline has grown at the CAGR of 20.44%. We don’t anticipate any drastic fall in growth rate going forward.

3.   The stock is available for a very cheap PE of 6.54, where the industry average is 9.23. The closest peer REC is hovering around a PE of 6.84. The net sales of PFC is 13014 crore in comparison to REC’s 10337 crore. The stock is available at the Price/Book value ratio of 1.29

4.   Company has good dividend record. In the last financial year, the company has given total 60% dividend (10% final and 50% interim).

5.   The NPA of the company is moderate i.e. 0.93% of the total loan amount as on 31-Mar-2012.

6.   The net interest income is quite healthy and consistent for PFC. NII rose 25% to 1299 crore in FY2012. PFC’s average NIM 3.89% in the last financial year is quite high in the Industry. One of the major reasons for such high margin is PFC’s capability to raise loan at low interest rate. PFC’s 4950 crore tax-free bond is now open from 14th December, 2012.

7.    PFC is looking into broadening its business activities.  Financing coal mining and gas station projects in India and abroad are part of its expansion plan.

Potential Risks :

1.     The depreciation of rupee is a major cause of concern for PFC as it has raised money from foreign. With the depreciation of rupee, it needs to shell out more money.

2.   PFC has good exposure to state electricity boards and utilities. It increases the risk for PFC as these companies turned out to be defaulter in last few occasions. However, with SEB bailout package from Government and the increase in tariff helped to reduce this risk.

Considering both the positive and negative aspects of the stock, the stock can be bought for 6 months to 12 months with a price target of 230-240.

NTPC Looks Good For Short Term Gain

The government is planning for its FPO for 9.5% stake sale by 15th January, 2013. In the last quarter, Q2FY13, NTPC posted an excellent result. Its revenue grew by 4.8% YoY to 171.68 billion rupees, while the bottomline rose by 29.6% YoY to 31.42 billion rupees.

NTPC was in short term down trend. However, on last Friday, 14th Dec, 2012, the price of NTPC closed at 152.80 up by 1.46%.The volume was quite high at around 5.5 million, whereas 30 days average volume for NTPC is 2.2 Million (NSE). NTPC has strong support at 150.  Also, technically, RSI of NTPC is in oversold region. In the Bollinger band, NTPC price has touched the lower Bollinger band and hence up-move is expected in near future.

Considering the technicals and the last quarter result, the stock can be bought with a target of Rs 160-162

NASA doomed the doomsday theory with a release of a video

In this video, the Mayan civilization has been highly regarded. It has told that Mayans have expansive sense of time. And the times that Mayans used, dwarf those currently being used by the modern astronomers. However, it also explained that the Mayan’s end of calendar has been misinterpreted. To clarify the same, an analogy has been drawn with odometers of vehicles. As per Mayan civilization, the world was created 5125 years ago. The date was August 11, 3114 BC. In Mayan’s complex long count calendar the date was 13.0.0.0.0. Like odometer, the Mayan long count calendar rotates and it goes back to the same date i.e. 13.0.0.0.0. on 21st December, 2012. So, 13 b’ak’tuns will be elapsed between 21st December, 2012 and the creation date of the world. This phenomenon is being treated as end of Mayan calendar.

Also the NASA scientists claimed that no known asteroids or comets are moving toward the earth. If it’s the case, we would be able to see it in naked eye. They have also rejected the theory of planet Nibiru.

Kill Windows processes from Command Prompt

Let us look into this in detail. Like unix system, a process in windows also can be killed by its process id. But first of all, you need to know what all processes are running in your system. To get the list of processes running in your system, use the below command.

You will get all the processes under column "Image Name" and all process Ids under PID. If you want to kill a particular process, you need to use the command “TASKKILL” and associate it with the process name or the process Id. Suppose, we would like to terminate the notepad process, then we can issue the below command

So, if you need to kill any process by its name, you need to add /IM with the command. Suppose, we need to kill a particular notepad process, we need to provide process id. See the below command for the same

I do like the command prompt killing process as it is more powerful and having lots of features. From many features of TASKKILL, my few favorite ones are as given below

1) Using the command prompt, we can kill all processes pertaining to a particular application together. As for example, in our last example, if we would like to kill all the notepad processes, using the taskkill command, the /IM parameter would suffice. You can even specify wild card in your process name.

2) You can provide filter along with the command. I like the most the filter on STATUS i.e. RUNNING, NOT RESPONDING and UNKNOWN. So if you would like to terminate all hung up processes, you can execute the below command

taskkill /FI "STATUS eq NOT RESPONDING"

You see how powerful is this tool where you need not to open task manager and find out the hung up processes.

3) You specify the /T parameter with taskkill command and it terminates all child processes when you terminate the parent process. So, you don’t face any issue of orphan process, as you experience in task manager.

4) Another feature, which I like the most, is the capability to kill a process in remote computer. The syntax for the same is

TASKKILL /S system /U username /P password /IM “taskname”

I hope that you found these features impressive and leverage this command prompt utility from time to time.

Gmail offline-An alternative for desktop mail client

Have you ever experienced a situation where you wanted a mail very badly but either your internet connection was down or you didn’t have access to internet? I think that most us have faced this situation. The definite solution is to use your tablet or Microsoft Outlook. However, many of us don’t use tablet or even if we do use, there is a limitation on the mail archival. Microsoft Outlook is quite useful in this sense but many people don’t feel comfortable using outlook with webmail. Moreover both of these items cost you money. If you are the one falling in one of these categories, you can access your gmail without a tablet and without Microsoft outlook. But how to access gmail offline?

Gmail offline, a new extension for chrome, is a new release from Google. As the name suggests, the gmail outlook will give you access to your gmail offline. However, this extension is only available with Chrome. You can install the extension from Chrome Websore. In the webstore, search for “gmail offline”. Once you find the extension, click on the button “Add to Chrome” and this extension will be added to your browser.

What is gmail offline

Once the offline gmail extension is installed, you can see the offline gmail icon in blue in your browser. In offline mode, you can compose, delete, send or even can archive e-mail. how to access gmail offline

As on the date of writing this article, the offline gmail extension is still in beta state and the latest version 1.19 was released on 16th November, 2012.

Delta State

The cycle rate in this state is 0.5 Hz to 4 Hz. This state is arrived in our deep and dreamless sleep. This is the state of unconsciousness.

Theta State

In theta state, the cycle rate is 4 Hz to 7.5 Hz. Theta is called to be the doorway towards our unconscious state or Delta state. This is a subconscious state. Before sleeping or just after we wake up from sleep, we get into the state of theta. This is the state, where we all come out of profound creative ideas. This state is also achieved in our dream. This is the reason that we can remember a dream just after we wake up and thereafter we forget the same

Beta State

The cycle rate here is 12-30 Hz.  This is the state, when we are wake and conscious. As you can understand, we generally remain in beta state during our daily routine work. Where beta is required to work meticulously, too much of beta makes us tired, restless and anxious. This is the reason that why people are so much stressed now a days. A very good example of this is driving in a very crowded road in a city for long time. This makes the cycle frequency high making the state as Beta. And this is why we feel very tired after a prolonged drive in a crowded city.

Alpha State

Alpha State

The cycle rate in this state is lower than Beta i.e. 7.5 to 12 Hz. This state is achieved in relaxation, light meditation and day dreaming. During this state, we achieve high imagination and concentration. In this phase, our memory power gets increased. In this phase, the outlook for life gets changed and it brings higher possibility of getting success in life. This state is also the source of creative visualization.

Before sleeping or just after we wake up from sleep, we get into the state of theta. This is the state, where we all come out of profound creative ideas. This state is also achieved in our dream. This is the reason that we can remember a dream just after we wake up and thereafter we forget the same.

Delta State

The cycle rate in this state is 0.5 Hz to 4 Hz. This state is arrived in our deep and dreamless sleep. This is the state of unconsciousness.

21st December 2012, the end of world - What the world says?

The end of the world theory basically comes from the Mayan history. According to Popul Vuh, we are living in the fourth world. In the Mayan long count, the fourth world will end after 13 b’ak’tuns or 5125 years and following their timeline, the world will come to an end on 21-Dec-2012.  According to the many believers, the reason for the end of the world is not definitely known. One of the many theories is that Nibiru, a planet discovered by the Sumerians is heading towards the earth and it will cause the end of the world. Nibiru is a planet, which comes back every 3600 years and causes major destruction. There are other theories also behind it. Some people say that there will be geomagnetic storm which will destroy the entire world. A geomagnetic storm is a disturbance in the earth’s magnetosphere.  It is caused by the interplanetary medium.

Despite our modern science has refuted all the theories behind the end of the world, there are many people across the globe reluctant to give up the 21st December theory. To nullify the threat from the heart of the people, NASA released a FAQ, which can be found at http://www.nasa.gov/topics/earth/features/2012.html

In spite of all these effort, there are often news popping up from every nook and corner of the world. According to the “The New York Times”, there are number of steps taken by different government officials. The Russian Government sent a message to the mass people ensuring that the world isn’t going to end on 21st December. Russian government is continuously monitoring the situation and keeping track on whatever happening on the earth. In France, the government has put an access restriction to Bugarach mountain, which is claimed to be a sacred place and will survive during the time of devastation. In Yucatan state in Mexico, which was full of Mayan population, a Mayan festival has been arranged on 21st December to show that all will all be well after 21st December. Recently Aussie prime minister talked about this recent panic in a latest press conference. She said to the “remaining fellow Australians” that she will be with them till the end day of the world. Let’s see what see says

Invest in GMDC - A consistent Performer

The investment rationals are as given below

1.     Lignite demand intact -The macro-economic factor is favorable for lignite, which has seen a constant rise in production at CAGR of 7.3% in the period from 2007 to 2012 for GMDC. Lignite is holding 80% revenue of GMDC.

2.   Increase in Lignite production – GMDC’s Bhavnagar mine has seen a huge increase in production. GMDC further planned to increase Bhavnagar’s production capacity to 5 MT. Apart from this, GMDC’s  other plants excluding Panandhro have also shown impressive increase in production.  GMDC’s new plant at Umarsar is expected to start production at the end of FY 2013. Combining all factors, GMDC will see good increase in Lignite production in the next year and thereafter.

3.   Diversification of Business – Apart from mining business, GMDC has also diversified its business into other areas. Power is one of the major portfolios. Though the power segment hasn’t contributed majorly, going forward it will play an important role.

4.   High growth prospect of Bauxite – Though bauxite only contributes to 5% of the overall revenue, the growth prospective of Bauxite is quite high. GMDC has also planned to increase its bauxite production.

5.    Vertical Integration – To add more value to its product, GMDC has explored into the areas of vertical integration. This strategy is already operative as it has formed joint ventures with number of organizations namely Gujarat Jaypee Cement and Infrastructure Ltd, Gujarat Gokul Power Company Ltd, Bhavnagar Energy Company Ltd, Gujarat state mining and resources corporation ltd, Naini Coal Company Ltd, RBG Mineral industries ltd, Gujarat credo mineral industries ltd, National Aluminium Company Ltd (NALCO), Alumina Refinery Chemicals, Gujarat Fluorochemicals Ltd, Navin Fluorine International Ltd.

6.   Price increment in near future – GMDC is in a position to increase the price of lignite in near future. This will improve the bottomline of the company.  GMDC being the sole trader of lignite in the state and as there is no nearby coal mine, GMDC is well poised to increase the price.

7.    Process efficiency – The project iMine has gone live in April, 2011. After implementing ERP, one year has passed by and it has been stabilized. This has improved the overall process by integrating the applications, workflow management and e-mail facility.

8.   Financial Performance – GMDC’s financial performance is quite impressive and consistent. In the last year, total revenue was up 16.72% and profit was up by 29.82%. Being a debt free company, GMDC doesn’t have any debt burden. Currently the stock is hovering at PE of 10.76 and expected to be around a PE of 8 in FY 2014.

Risk – The strict norms and environmental regulations take long time to give clearance to the mining projects, which delays the overall project timeline.

Considering overall performance of GMDC, its track record and macro-economic factor, it can give 20% to 30% return in the next 6 to 12 months.

The Wheel of Life

Just imagine that you are driving on a freeway at a speed of 60 miles/hr and suddenly one of your car tires got punctured. Now, there is one possibility that you reduced the speed and drove it to the open space by the side of the road. There is another possibility that you lost control and met an accident. In the first instance, it is a delay to reach your destination. In the second instance, the outcome is more fatal and it can even take our life. I have illustrated the above example to draw a relation with our life. Our life is nothing but a car, which is running on wheels, the wheels of life.

Have you ever thought that we have so many different characteristics with in us. Different people have different expectations from us. Your boss in your office wants you to be very sincere. He will be extremely happy if you spend extra 2/3 hours in office or take up some of his responsibilities. Your spouse wants you to be very caring and loving. He\she wants that you spend extra time with him\her. He\she expects that you spend ample time to bring up the kids. When you are busy in satisfying the demands of your boss and spouse, your friends become disheartened by the fact that you are not coming to meet them often and not giving them enough time. So, you can see that you are playing different roles in different arena in your life. It is very difficult to satisfy everyone associated with you. And exactly here comes the concept of wheel of life.

As we have pointed out that there are different dimensions of life. If we fail to take care an important dimension, our life can be dis-balanced as it happens in case of a wheel with uneven spoke. To decide whether our wheel of life is not distorted, we have a very simple and powerful tool. You can easily practice it at home.

The Wheel of Life - A simple tool

Draw a wheel as given below. In general, there are five concentric circles. The smallest circle starts with 1 and biggest one ends with 5. Also, there are number of spokes of the wheel. Each spoke signifies an important dimension or role in your life. The number 0 (centre) to 5 signifies how well you have played a particular role. Now let’s start using the tool, the wheel of life.

The Wheel of Life

1.     Think thoroughly and find out different important dimensions in your life. You can take help of someone to find out these roles. Each of these roles will represent a spoke in the wheel of life. Some generic roles are displayed in the figure here. If required, you can take a print out of the figure and customize according to your need.

2.    Now think through and determine how successful you are in playing these roles. Rate in the figure of 0 to 5. 0 signifies that you are totally failed to play the role and 5 signifies that you have played that role to the full extent possible.

3.   Now draw each role as one spoke of the wheel of life. The length of each spoke depends on your rating for that particular role.

4.   Join the tip of each spoke.

Now it represents your wheel of life. Is it uneven or is it a smooth circle? If all the spokes are of same length, your wheel of life can move on smoothly. If it’s not, you need to find out, where you have given less rating. For example, if you have given less rating in the role of Parents, you should find out what you should do to fill up this gap. To move it back to balance, you need to create a plan of action and task list. Once you work on a certain point, come back after one month or so to check the wheel of life again.

We need to keep in mind two different aspects here. 1) The rating is given by you and you should always judge from an angle of what should have ideally be done in your situation and what you are doing now i.e. the rating will signify the achievement. The rating should always be an honest rating. Otherwise, you will be fooling yourself. 2) It is not necessary to have a rating of 5 but the rating should be consistent across all the dimensions. Otherwise, it will imply that you are ignoring that particular role of your life to some extent in compensation of putting more focus on the others.

I suggest that you use the wheel of life tool frequently. It is an eye opener for us and helps us to take necessary action before it’s too late.
