Wordpress and Joomla – A comparative study of the two most popular CMS

Wordpress and Joomla are the two most popular content management systems (CMS). I started my blogging journey with Joomla. There was not any specific reason behind choosing Joomla. I was just in search for a good CMS. Then, I came to know about Joomla from one of my friends and started using it. However, after around six months, I decided to migrate to Wordpress. Having exposure in both Wordpress and Joomla, I thought that I would share my experience with my readers on different aspects of these two CMS.

Ease of operation – It’s very easy to use Wordpress. Any new user can master himself in Wordpress with in 3 to 4 hours. Whereas, Joomla is more complex than Wordpress. Understanding Joomla operation needs more time than that of Wordpress. The concepts of menu, category, module etc. in Joomla need deep understanding. In comparison, Wordpress is pretty straightforward and doesn’t comprise of so many concepts as that of Joomla. For example, if you want to create submenu, you can easily do it in Wordpress through category. Wherever, in Joomla, you have to create a separate menu under a menu. And then, you have to associate with a module.

Flexibility – Joomla seems to be more flexible than Wordpress. In Joomla, you can literally do anything that you want. You can use the module to display different things at different places. You have different kind of menus e.g. Category Blog, Log in Form, Single Article etc. Using these menu types, practically you can organize your site as you want. You have also great flexibility in terms of controlling user access.  Joomla also has language manager, which is really handy, if you have your target visitors in different language speaking countries. There are many other features, which make Joomla more flexible than Wordpress.

Plugin – We can add different features to both Wordpress and Joomla. In Joomla, it is called extension and can be installed through extension manager. Whereas, in Wordpress the same is called “Plug In”. Wordpress seems to be little ahead of Joomla in this area. Though, we do have good number of add on for both the CMS, Wordpress plug ins are more popular. CommentLuv is such a plug in, specifically meant for Wordpress. This kind of plug in does not exist for Joomla as of the date of writing this article.

SEO – Wordpress SEO is supposed to be better than Joomla. There are good number of plug ins available to help you to streamline your SEO. In Joomla, though, we have similar kind of extensions available, they are slightly lagging behind than that of Wordpress. Though the SEO of Wordpress is better than Joomla, the Joomla SEO is not as bad to become the sole criteria for selecting Wordpress.

Wordpress and Joomla - So, which CMS will you choose? Overall, Joomla is slightly younger than Wordpress. However, both of them walking abreast. Both are equally competitive as a CMS. We do also have large number of good templates available for both the CMS. So while you would like to decide to go for a particular CMS, you need to also consider (apart from the above mentioned points) the kind of site you are building. If this is a small website like blog, Wordpress is suitable and less time consuming to maintain. Whereas, if this is large website for a company, Joomla may be the preferred one.

  1. May possibly an online site which has in action for a time at this time, and to get several explanations I have to switch it all which has a Wordpress online site... Hence, how could i begin to build that Wordpress online site - at a seperate folder from the "public_html" folder? Then when you're in a position to transfer it all throughout the public_html folder, do you have to precise regardless of what file-paths and website glitches?.
